Social Commentary or Slapstick ?By P. King from Somerset , 20 Jul 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]In my opinion this is a hugely under-rated film which works on many levels. As a cautionary tale of the dangers of consumerism it manages to be witty but not pompous.
Its also a marvellous, funny, old-fashioned slapstick comedy with fine performances by Micheal Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The only negative being the rather soppy opening section.
Told through the eyes of Danny DeVito's smug divorce lawyer, it shows how desire for wealth and 'happiness' can cause the most ardent love birds to turn into opponents. The violence, however is of the 'Home Alone', 'Laurel and Hardy' type.
Do not watch with your partner!

do you know anyone who's behaved like this ?By TorpedoExocet (4 reviews) , 12 Jun 2013For me, 'it was a film.' ...and... 'that I shall never bother to watch again..' (I begrudgingly suppose it had a sort of a moral or two); and perhaps I wish I had the mind/mentality to see in the film that which some of the 5* raters saw.
soooo funnyBy racytracy (26 reviews) , 21 Nov 2012watched this film before years ago and it still made me laugh now as much as it did then .....great if you fancy a good laugh hehe :)
Very different!By a customer , 13 Jan 2012I really much enjoyed this film as it is nothing like you would expect. The acting, especially Micheal Douglas, was good and from the beginning you want to continue watching this film to see where it will end. I very much enjoyed it because, unlike most people would think, this is a very plausible story. I would recommend to watch, if not for anything else, just for a change!
Joint greatest comedy ever madeBy JimLadd (11 reviews) from Bury , 30 Sep 2011Great film, having been married for 23 years it is easy to see how a relationship could deterioate so far. Without any real communication, this would be the result. Add the humerous twist and the real onscreen chemistry of Douglas and Turner, on a par with Quaid and Turner in Undercover Blues. Turner was a talent stolen from us by poor health. The film is easily a 4 star, the extra half is earned by the opening wet blouse scene, sorry but I am a hot blooded male. Great film, would recommend this and Undercover Blues.
