[Highly rated reviewer]Mitchum's breakthrough movie and a good one. The story line is far more realistic and less gung-ho than many wartime morale boosters and all the better for that.
Well worth a watching.
Standard GI issueBy Oldbloke (349 reviews) from Sidmouth , 18 Apr 2013A company of US soldiers are adopted by a war correspondent as they fight their way though North Africa, Sicily and mainland Italy. Quality of this transfer was disappointing, a lot of it was very blurred. Cliched war movie focuses on the miserable existence of the ordinary infantryman with little originality. However, Mitchum is effortlessly convincing as their leader and the final moments are surprisingly moving.
just averageBy denis007 (167 reviews) , 10 Aug 2012I was a bit disappointed by the story itself. Mitchum is usually great but here he did not come out right I thought. The story is certainly realistic, but a bit simple. I would have liked the story to focus more on Pyle more than anybody else but the director did not choose to do so. It is the story of C company depicted throughout the movie and their adventure in Tunisia and Monte Cassino. The story seems to focus more on the soldiers and the sergeant especially. There was little on who Pyle was and what he wrote during the war, except at the very end of the movie when we all hear his famous quote. Nevertheless, I do not regret watching it.
