[Highly rated reviewer]As a huge fan of Alan Rickman, I have been wanting to see this film for years. Apart from the difficulty in hearing some of the characters' lines (especially Rickman's), I was disappointed in what could have been a fantastic film. Alan Rickman was very good in it, as usual, but I felt that the script was poor. Dr Anton Mesmer appears to have been a fascinating person. After doing a little research, I discovered that there was so much more to him than presented in this film. The basis for a truly engaging and enlightening story is there, especially now when holistic treatments and therapies for illness are on the rise (as Mesmer practiced over 200 years ago). The quaility of the acting was generally very good and many scenes were sumptuously filmed, so I am somewhat surprised that the script differed so widely in quality from the rest of the film. Overall, worth seeing for Alan Rickman alone if you're a fan. If not, I'm not certain I'd pay to see it.

Oh My God!By niceday1 (23 reviews) from Derry , 07 Apr 2010The normally wonderful Alan Rickman must have REALLY needed the money ... this typcially paper thin piece of eurotrash is unworthy of him. Poorly written script, painful dialogue, wooden performances and awful music. This is 2 hours of your life you'll never get back. Shame on you Alan!
Mesmerising! For about 30 seconds...By Troopy (14 reviews) from London , 23 Aug 2009I greatly anticipated this film, being a Rickman fan and also being genuinely interested in the outlined story.
Unfortunately i was not impressed. Not only were most of the lines inaudible due to poor sound quality, but i found that the pace of the film was too slow.
Suprisingly, i didn't like Mr Rickman's performance in this film, however his voice was perfect for the film- hypnotic and drawling.
The performance was extremely similar to Rickmans portrayal of Grigori Rasputin, but without all the sex.
Not really worth a view. See 'Rasputin' instead.
major disappointmentBy echoesmyron (4 reviews) from Mitcham , 09 Jun 2009This was a bad costume drama with even worse script. I was expecting something much better from Alan Rickman.
No No NoBy a customer from Leeds , 02 Jun 2009As a lover of films both biographical and period I couldn't wait to watch this film. What a waste of a rental. Its rare I give in and turn off before the end but this one got 25 minutes. Even the talented Mr Rickman couldn't save this one. Avoid at all costs.
Customer ReviewBy a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008I thought this would be good - but you know what thought did. It was slow, no obvious plot and -well just don't bother
