Dark comedy minus the comedy!!By balearicbayes (23 reviews) from Denny , 19 Dec 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]This film had the potential to be on par with the likes of The Royal Tenenbaums and numerous other movies dealing with dysfunctional families, but it never quite reaches that level. There is just too much tragedy in the lead characters life for even the slightly funny bits to raise a smile.
I found myself more concerned with the fact that this film is based on Augusten Burroughs' personal memoirs, and alarmed that all these events actually happened to this poor kid!!!
There is a couple of redeeming qualities though- one is Annette Bening who acts her socks off as the crazy mum, and the second is that Augusten survived his traumatising childhood to become a success!!!
Think I might go back and read the book instead!!!

Interesting and unbelievable tale read it or watch itBy LisaJ (71 reviews) from ADDLESTONE , 06 Apr 2012THis is a bizarre tale and what makes it even stranger is it is true. I rented this movie on the back of the book and although it doesn't capture everything I could hear the authors voice through out the film. What an interesting and warped life totally fascinating. Maybe don't bother with the film but read this strange tale instead.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideIt made no sense at all. To believe this story you need the intelligence of the cast of geordie shore. Noone gives their child away to a strange shrink. no family could have a real christmas tree up for 2 years (it would shrivel up and die) and no child can have such little personality as Augustus. The acting is as bad as the mothers hair. It is a very stupid pointless film no intresting plot line. the acting is wooden and most of all its just plain stupid
no no no no noBy tellallyourfriends (12 reviews) from St. Neots , 07 Apr 2011When I rented this I expected something a lot more funny.
The trailer makes it appear to be funny when in actual fact its bleak. Every ones perspective of life is just depressing.
I sat through it and by the end thought maybe I needed to go see someone as I felt depressed.
