Helped me become Braver
, 02 Mar 2009
I love anime, but am very carefull what I watch, there are a lot of bad anime films and series out there, its becasue Japan produces so much.
Also we used to get some crappy anime series, it was hard to get hold of the hidden gems.
Now its a lot easier to see good anime, because it has become very popular.
I heard about this film while doing a search for new anime films, it looked interesting.
Some review said that it was for children and that it was no where near as good as Studio Ghilbli films, to me this means a lot.
I decided to rent it from love film, I knew a bit about how the film looked and the basic storyline, I just thought that it would be mediocre and the characters would not change and that it would end happy, I just thought it would be fun.
I was so wrong, it really thrilled me, I was right there with the characters, fighting the battles, inside and out.
The characters change, they go through personal battles, to me they were believable, of course its a fantasy, but it was human.
Thank goodness it had difficult themes, rather than everything being fine, his family being all nice and thank goodness for the ending.
This is a true gem, with wonderful colourful animation, great characters and the soundtrack is too good.
But there are a couple of things that I wish they could have changed, in the end I give up worrying, for its all so wonderful and life afirming.
There is a piece of Japanese pop rock in the middle, witch is over a montage, I do not like montage's, I think they happen when people get lazy with there film making, its so that you can fit many things into a short time span, but the real problem is that they do not have talking, so you just have to sit there listening to the music and watching the charachters, it does not do wonders for your connection to the story and the characters.
I wish there was a version without this bit, what would have been wrong with making it just a few minutes longer and having no montage, just clips of all the things they do together.
Its ok though, I can deal with that really short sequence that some people will love, I think.
The other problem, not that it is a real problem, as it happens all the time with voice acting, but I just wish that it was played by a boy, when I saw that the voice was played by a women it makes it kinda odd for me, when I watch it and know that its a women doing an 11 year old boys voice, oh well, I don't mind it, its just odd to me, she was great though, she is a very good voice actor.
Peace out to all
This film made me feel brave and it made me feel that there was good in the world, witch is an important thing.
I wish you all the best, if you like anime, or adventure, or friendship, or great stories with a meaning, then rent Brave Story.
