The Greatest Ever War Movie?

One of the best war films ever made and possibly one of the greatest films across any genre. Richard Attenborough's breathtaking epic sits confortably amongst other masterpieces such as The Great Escape and Ice Cold in Alex. Unlike many Hollywood crowd pleasers the film is true to history and represents an accurate account of Operation Market Garden and the cast list reads like a whos who of world cinema. Everything about this film is epic: the tank battles, the war-torn street fighting and the biggest parachute drop ever seen. A Bridge too Far will keep you enthralled throughout and will leave you wishing for 3 more action-packed hours.- Was this review helpful to you?

By dawnie3000 (3 reviews) , 05 Feb 2012One of the best war films we have ever watched and the cast lists was excellent . Everything about this film is epic: the tank battles, the war-torn street fighting and the biggest parachute drop ever seen. Even the kids sat and watched it for 3 hours.

An epic not bridged

Given all the separate strands to be tied together Attenborough does a an excellent job in keeping the story in place.
A lot of familiar faces help to remind you each separate strand and all do capable jobs with the possible exception of Ryan O'Neal who does not seem to bring the gravitas to his role that the situation would have caused.
Doesn't quite make epic status but a better fist of it than Monty's original plan.- Was this review helpful to you?

almost there

A bridge too far
By simes (234 reviews) from near Gloucester , 26 Aug 2010This is a very exciting film about how the british captured the arnhem bridge during the second world war or tried to! the episode was a major cock-up, not enough planes or supplies and radio's that did not work.
Still it is an interesting insight into how things can go wrong due to lack of prior research or planning. The story made me laugh in parts it is so british, posh oxford and cambridge accents!! anyway a good watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
