Life is no picnic for the ants on Ant Island! Each summer, a gang of greedy grasshoppers - led by the menacing and manipulative Hopper - descends upon the colony to demand a hefty portion of the ants' hard-earned harvest and generally make life miserable for this peaceful community. Our hero Flik, an original thinker out of step with the rest of the more traditionally minded colony, takes it upon himself to get outside help and mistakenly enlists an unemployed troupe of bug performers from a second-rate flea circus to join the fight against the grasshoppers. Working together in their new-found friendship, the ants and the circus bugs prepare for a climactic confrontation with the grasshoppers. When Flik's plan starts to unravel, the action and comedy turn fast and furious as he attempts to save the colony and his reputation.

This follow-up to the ground-breaking Toy Story from director John Lasseter may have less-beguiling characters than Woody and Buzz Lightyear, but the computer-animated effects are if anything even more wondrous. Here the action centres on an ant colony where clumsy worker Flik (voiced by Dave Foley) accidentally destroys the grain that's regularly offered to appease a band of hostile grasshoppers led by the bullying Hopper (a superb characterisation by Kevin Spacey). As the colony struggles to find twice as much grain, Flik employs a flea circus of colourful eccentrics to do battle with the grasshoppers. The result is a witty variation on The Seven Samurai, filled with verdant art — and heart. It may lack the social message of the similarly themed Antz, which appeared the same year, but this is just as entertaining.
"...A BUG'S LIFE makes jaunty, imaginative use of both extraordinary technology and bold storytelling possibilities within the insect world..."
If these ratings were out of 10 then this would be a 9.
A real good fun film for all the family, and good to watch even if it's not with the kids. It's for all ages and is entertaining and it's definitely one of those that you can watch time and again, even the adults.
Very much in the vein of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc.
Humorous and Entertaining for everyone, and better than Antz!
Although this has been out for a few years I avoided it until recently as my younger brother is of age to appreciate movies now, and I must say I was rather impressed.
Some of the recent child releases such as the two Scooby-Doo movies I just found awful, but this is in keeping with the likes of Toy Story and Monsters Inc, but has one small advantage. It's longer! At just over 90 minutes and not lacking fun, this one runs on when you're finally comfortable on the sofa.
I'd definitely reccommend this one for any household with children under 10, but I admit I enjoyed it at the age of 20.
Jerry Seinfeld's celebrated sitcom was famously about nothing. It's proved a tough act to follow. Nearly ten years since Seinfeld called it a day, the key creatives haven't exactly flourished. Only the show's co-creator Larry David has thrived with his reality-style Curb Your Enthusiasm. Michael Richards crashed and burned just last year, while the highlight for Julia Louis-Dreyfuss was probably playing ant princess Atta in A Bug's Life. (Jason Alexander played Lightning, the wonder dog, in... Read more
