    A Chorus of Disapproval

Jeremy Irons plays the part of a man, recently widowed, who moves to Scarborough. He joins a local amateur dramatic society led by an eccentric welshman, played by Anthony Hopkins as they are rehearsing A Beggar's Opera. He is offered a very minor part, then progresses in stages and is promoted to the lead. Attempts to make friends among the locals lead to some hilarious twists and turns and complications with relationships, as the rehearsals continue. A Chorus of Disapproval, written by Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Michael Winner has an all star cast including Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Irons, Prunella Scales, Patsy Kensit, Sylvia Syms and Gareth Hunt.

Made in 1988 it is now slightly dated, but still very funny with some very comic, typical Alan Ayckbourn lines and over the top local characters. Enjoyed it.

A good rendition of a superb play...

It's a little dated now, but some superb performances from the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Irons...

If you have ever had the pleasure of being involved with an amateur theatre company with all its trials and tribulations then you should be able to relate to this querky story following the journey of a middle aged man trying to rebuild his social life in a new town. It seems that every female member of the operatic society that he hastily joins has designs upon him in one way or another...

A love triangle or four, a positively mental operatic director (Hopkins) and some sweet little ditties from The Beggars Opera make this film a reasonably fair translation from a superb stage play...
