Curious, almost plotless family comedy of the old school, with the difference that some grotesquerie and tastelessness is added. On the whole, however, an amusing entertainment for adults who don't mind their mood of sentimental nostalgia being tilted at

This flim takes place during a time in America before McDonald's & Disney when life was simple. All eight year old Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun. All everyone tells him is he will shoot his eye out. It is a slice of life in a mid west town during the 50's. Written and narrated by Jean Shepherd a humorist and radio personality of the 50's & 60's.
This is a genius christmas movie unlike anything made recently. Even though it was made in the 80's but set in the 50's the plot has remained timeless - 8 year old Ralphie only wants 1 thing for christmas (bb rifle) but his mum disapproves - 'you'll shoot your eye out!' How familiar does that sound?
There's a real innocence to the 50's setting when kids were kids, bullies plied their trade with their fists and for 4 weeks Santa Reigned Supreme. In true 50's style there's narration dotted throughout but its Ralphies thoughts as a child we're hearing, despite the maturity of the voice. Delivered with superb dead-pan execution, this provides more than a few laugh out loud moments.
I sympathised with Ralphie when i saw this as a kid; surely everyone remembers wanting something so bad but being told 'maybe next year.' Now as an adult, i can see the parents point of view (but i'm still rooting for the wee man!)
This is honestly a movie that has something for everyone but like most great comedies, best enjoyed with company.
