Michael Caine's tough-as-nails gangster flick Get Carter has been named the greatest British film ever in a new poll. ShortList magazine named the 1971 story of murder and revenge as its number one ahead of 1979 cult classic Quadrophenia and another Michael Caine classic, The Italian Job. Director Stanley Kubrick's vast archive is to come to London to be housed in a purpose-built centre. The hugely influential director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining amassed an archive that includes all aspects of the production of his films, including many drafts of scripts, costumes, props, background research and much more. The man behind The Birds, Psycho and Vertigo should have been given an Oscar, according to a new poll. Alfred Hitchcock was nominated six times as best director at the Academy Awards but he was never actually given the gong. But voters in a survey by the Turner Classic Movies channel have tried to make up for that in some small way - by voting him top of a list of directors who should have won.
