Marlon Brando's sporadic screen appearances towards the end of his career veered between the lightweight Don Juan DeMarco to the downright embarrassing The Island of Dr Moreau. However, this worthy drama saw him deliver one of his most passionate performances in a long time, even if it is in a supporting role. Donald Sutherland stars as the ordinary white South African who is gradually awakened to the injustices of the repressive apartheid regime; Brando is the liberal lawyer who helps him challenge the establishment. The star-studded support cast also includes Susan Sarandon, Zakes Mokae, Jürgen Prochnow and Janet Suzman, and, although it lacks the epic scale of films such as Cry Freedom, director Euzhan Palcy still succeeds in producing a compelling and disturbing portrait of the brutality in pre-Mandela South Africa.

Not bad for the time it was made

Mainly hired for cameo by Marlon Brando - always a joy to watch. Better films of this genre more recently produced.
