Nice try, no cigar
By FCAhound (71 reviews) from London & Norfolk , 26 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
A first script, shot in 20 days on a limited budget is never likely to make the Oscar shortlist, and this film is no rule breaker in that respect.
But it is a bravely black comedy that is genuinely, startlingly black while being doggedly, dourly comedic, too. Dylan Moran is as artfully, fumblingly good as he is in everything he does. The rest of the cast also do very good jobs. The script is so full of twists that any attempt to describe it would constitute a spoiler....
So it's not time wasted by any means. As long as you don't confuse comedy with laugh-a -minute fun.- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Black Books it ain't
By Rankintrevor (36 reviews) , 08 Jan 2013Ugly bloke with no money, no personality, no prospects, cares for his vegetable brother but has a beautiful, younger girlfriend who he also lies to and steals from while he spends his waking hours with his gormless down and out drunken friend, when not ducking from doing anything around the flat. Well if you believe that starting scenario, this is your film. How glad I was of the fast forward to the very predictable end.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't know what I was expecting but this wasn't it.
Brilliantly acted, scripted, shot. Beautiful.
I laughed, cringed and stared in utter disbelief all the way through.- Was this review helpful to you?
