Bleakly sophisticated comedy from this team's headline-grabbing period; full of interest and amusement, it never quite sparkles enough to remove the doubtful taste.
The photography of a bombed out Berlin in the days just after WWII is worth seeing on its own (apparently Wilder took at lot more) but the film does not quite hang together in the way you normally expect from Wilder. Some great scenes, witty script but I never believed the male lead (cannot remember his name - see the problem) was going to fall for the lady senator when the alternative was Marlene Dietrich. Having said that, I liked the idea of playing a narrow minded uptight Nazi US senator type against an ex-Nazi who displays all the characteristics of a free-thinking yank. Good joke.
