  • Sloppy, predictable comedy with practised performers getting a few easy laughs. The producers tried to excuse its imperfections by promoting it as 'a romp'.

    A French Mistress

I only rented this because a friend appears as an extra. However it is very funny indeed and a great example of the British comedy films of the period and of the contribution of the Boulting Brothers. By today's standards it is simply made and has the feel of a stage play. This is a plus as it puts the emphasis on the script and the acting both of which are terrific. The plot is based on the disruption caused at a boys public school when, shock horror, the head appoints a French Mistress who turns out to be georgeous and played superbly by Agnes Laurent. The cast are all excellent but my favourite is Irene Handl as the dreadful cook, who had me in stitches. Less slapstick than the St Trinians films and the humour based around the British obsession with public school life, with the start of the 60s attitude to the stuffy past, also with the English male's inability to cope with women, particularly French women. Enjoy
