Fans of Barbara Cartland's rich settings, English poise and tales of improbable innocents ensnared by lascivious men may well enjoy this sugary contrivance, which is adapted from one of her novels. Others may find it unintentionally funny, as a decent cast headed by Oliver Reed, Sarah Miles and Lysette Anthony is forced to recite slabs of dialogue to camera in what is, sadly, a profoundly unmoving romantic drama. Done well, this kind of romp can be entertaining, but director John Hough's effort falls well short of the mark.
Working with an entirely diabolical and predictable plot, the players carried off reasonable, albeit harnessed performance. Given a B. Cartland premise, not too shoddy, but for an entertaining or interesting feature, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.
