this is a superb film. it is a change of pace for Russell Crowe in the warmly romantic movie called 'A Good Year'.
the film shows a charm and humour, which will appeal to fans of a good love story, as well as the beautiful scenery in Provence.
Russell Crowe plays Max, a high-powered, unscrupulous, but very funny, and highly successful investment broker, who is something of an expert. He has little time, for life outside his work.
When his estranged uncle dies ( who is played by Albert Finney, in flash back form), Max inherits the vineyard in France where he grew up as a child.
Under investigation, for a more-than-a-little-shady stock transaction, the trip to France gives the broker, a chance to let things simmer down, while he unloads the property - his first intention is to sell the vineyard.
Max views it as an opportunity to cash in the vinery and pocket the profits.
the flashback conversations between Albert Finney's estranged Uncle's character and Freddie Highmore who played Charlie in the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp, ( who plays Max as a young boy) are particularly thought-provoking and well-written.
Although Max' first intentions are to sell the vineyard for a profit, childhood memories, old friends, the arrival of an unknown, illegitimate heir, from America (played by Abbie Cornish), and a feisty, beautiful local French girl (played by Marion Cotillard) all conspire to force Max to rethink his priorities, as he falls under the spell of Provence.
well worth renting out.- Was this review helpful to you?

(380)My favourite film
By TristramH (1 review) , 23 May 2013I watch it regularly. A superbly balanced movie, which the cast and Director obviously loved making. Can't understand why it is not better known. Excellent performances from the main characters but watch out for great turns by Archie Panjabi and Didier Bourdon. Marc Klein's screenplay is brilliant. I also liked Peter Mayle's novel although I couldn't see any connection at all between these two works apart from the location.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not a good film.
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 11 Mar 2013Absolute rubbish . Impossible to get through. Crowe is mis cast in this. Good scenery photography but that is all. Otherwise this film is appalling.- Was this review helpful to you?

French connections
By Steve400 (17 reviews) , 03 Feb 2013Don't miss the point here, this is about the feel good factor of French life (fairly true to life), carried well by Russell Crowe as a busy English stock trader. Definitely worth seeing, good subtle humour, Obviously a love story as well. Interesting plot and I really enjoyed it.... twice!- Was this review helpful to you?
