Somehow the biting satire of shallow lives and worthless people that tinkled and twinkled through the novel ended up like a cut-price Downton Abbey off-shoot. What a waste of Kristin Scott-Thomas! What a waste of source material!

Oh its pretty all right - in fact that was what made me give it a 2 star rating. Beautifully filmed - but populated with small characters - poor Angelica Houston just looked trapped in what is a stunning little cameo in the book - ( I think she must have read the novel - thought 'what joy!' - turned up on set and thought ' well I'm here now')

I think the whole point the film missed was the savage humour of the original - it was too small - too confined - too in awe of itself - to justice to the title.
