Heralded by many as a work of genius by artist William Hogarth - A Harlots Progress was created by using sketches of prostitutes in the early 18th Century. This film follows William Hogarth (Toby Jones) and looks at the facts of his life, and also focuses on the life of a 22 year old prostitute who supposedly became his inspriation. From the creator of the forthcoming major Channel 4 drama series 'City of Vice', this prequel of sorts shows the graphic depiction of the squalor, sex and general tone of 1800's London.

I was impressed by the quality of acting of Toby Jones as 'Quilp' in the excellent production of the Old Curiosity Shop on TV just before Christmas so I thought I'd see what other things he'd done.
The paintings of William Hogarth have always been in the periphery of my knowledge but I knew nothing about the man, his lifestyle or indeed, that of rich and poor in C18th London.
This was brilliant. We felt as tho we were in the slums in Covent Garden and bashing hemp in Newgate Gaol.
We particularly liked the Brechtian captions telling us what happened to the real people portrayed and the voice over of people like Orla Guerin relating and comparing a C21st tragedy such as aids in Africa to the conditions of Hogarth's London.
Cast, setting, direction, lighting, music and dialogue all very good and credible. Its made us go and look up more about that period.
Don't regret renting it
