Simple for children to understand, yet sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy too, this wonderful adaptation of the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett (who also wrote The Secret Garden) is an instant classic. The importance of magic and imagination in all our lives is engagingly conveyed through the entrancing tale of a schoolgirl escaping into exotic flights of fancy after news of her father's death. Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón gives this spellbinding fable a dazzling look and an astonishing atmosphere that prove hard to resist. You'll be enthralled by this little marvel from colourful start to heart-rending finish.
"...A children's film that plays equally well to kids and adults....Matthews is a constant delight....Marvelously crafted in every respect..."
Purists who know the book may be suprised to find the school has moved to New York, and that Becky has changed colour, but I think these are both valid changes to make the film appeal to a wider audience.
What works really well in this adaptation is the settings and props. Things like the cramped, sickly-green front of the school; the puppetlike versions of the Indian myths; and the gorgeous transformation of Sarah's attic. These all combine to make a fairy tale out of a story , which suits the theme of the film very well.
This is a great film for your young children to watch, it has everything in it happiness sadness and excitement.
