Dim-witted romantic comedy that has the charm of regurgitated fast food; this is When Harry Met Sally for the immature.
Amanda Peet's vitality is the movie's driving force
I hadn't heard of this movie so wasn't expecting much. But I found it thoroughly enjoyable, despite a somewhat cheesy 'twist' ending.
The film kicks off with an unlikely (for me, more's the pity) mile-high one-night stand between two complete strangers.
At this point, he plays a drifter of few words (but some entrepreneurial ambitions) and she plays a sassy girl at the end of what one imagines was a rebellious teenage period.
Except that he doesn't want to remain a stranger and, despite his lack of gumption, the relationship resumes 3 years later when she picks up the phone on a rebound. By this point our hero has started a dot com business (in an unlikely field), and our heroine is a failing actress.
Nothing serious happens, tho these two see each other every year or two. Over this period his business grows dramatically (if unplausibly), leaving him with little interest in his social or family side. Meanwhile she finds her vocation and turns into a successful 'almost 30 something' artist, surrounded by forgettable 'smug married' friends procreating happily.
Until year 7, when we get the obligatory rom-com ending. This bit let it down for me but there were enough laughs along the way for me to finish the film with a big smile on my face.
No standout acting performances tho both Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher were well cast and didn't put a foot wrong.
If you like rom-coms I would definitely recommend this. Not as original as Hitch or Notting Hill but there is much more to relate to for the rest of us.
I can't imagine having ordered this film. It's not my age group. Maybe I pressed the wrong button. However, having received it, I watched it.
If you're under 30, and just falling in love, or out of it, or just been dumped, you may like this gentle, amusing romance. The two young actors who play the star-crossed lovers are very watchable. But nothing much happens. The couple get together, then go their separate ways several times before the ending and I won't spoilt it by saying it's happy or sad.Good for a girlie night in with a bottle of plonk, I'd say.
Woody Allen's Melinda And Melinda, an exploration of the tragic and comic nature of humanity, comes to DVD this week. The director of Deconstructing Harry, Mighty Aphrodite and Bullets Over Broadway seems to have scored another success with his intriguing take on life. The film stars Radha Mitchell, the former Neighbours actress whose career is starting to blossom after roles in Phone Booth, Man On Fire and Finding Neverland. Mitchell plays the role of Melinda, as the film alternates between... Read more
