This film was a pleasant surprise that captured my attention from the outset. I was expecting a light hearted love story set in wartime France. What I got was a haunting and equally disturbing drama set in Nazi occupied Paris of 1942.
The story revolves around a gay male couple who attempt to hide their love for each other for fear of persecution. Add to the mix their attempts to give refuge to a young Jewish woman, and the re-appearance of a troublesome brother and what follows is a tale of love, betrayal and great loss.
The script is well written, the story well told with solid performances from all the cast. If you never knew what happened to Homosexuals during the Second World War, prepare to be educated, shocked and saddened.
Every gay man should watch this film to understand and appreciate how fortunate they are in the contemporary world, not to have endure and suffer like so many did before them.
Shame on those who have given this movie 1 or 2 stars!
I found myself gripped by this film almost immediately - and that is the way with true tragedies. You fear an outcome but can not bear to look away. A Love to Hide sucks you in and spits out raw and shocking history at you. This happened. Other reviewers have drawn attention to the gay characters in the film but there is much more to this film than that. Much. It is about collaboration and cooperation with those you would rather not be; it is about sibling love and rivalry. It is also about the jews and the gays and their treatment at the hands of the nazis but truly it is about what people do to get by in trying times and the consequences of challenging the norm - for your faith, your love, your next pair of stockings or your childrens future. The music creates an increasingly tense atmosphere, the feel is of small town Paris, the actors are understated and ooze class and the effect has an impact you will not forget. You should watch this film. You should ask what what you have done as the brother, the worker, the lodger, the mayor... you get the picture? (..well get the picture!!)
