A Man Apart

When maverick DEA agents Sean Vetter (Vin Diesel) and Demetrius Hicks (Larenz Tate) team-up to bust notorious drug overlord "Memo" Lucero (Geno Silva), they soon find themselves in grave danger. When an attempted retaliatory strike by Lucero's gang results in the murder of Vetter's wife, Vetter violently confronts Lucero in his jail cell. Vetter hears the crime boss proclaim his innocence, and realizes that he and his DEA cohorts must go after the mysterious Diablo, who now appears to be running all drug-related business on the California-Mexico border. As the investigation into Diablo begins, Vetter's mind becomes clouded by revenge fantasies for his dead wife, and he is soon relinquished of his duties as an officer after a routine bust turns into a bloodbath. Forming a gang of rogue buddies from their days as street punks, Vetter and Hicks decide to risk everything and go above the law to track down the shadowy Diablo.
Director F. Gary Gray (FRIDAY) ensures that Vin Diesel's action-hero rep is cemented in this violent revenge tale. The fast-paced action builds to a visceral, nail-biting crescendo that is sure to appease any fans of Diesel's previous thrill-packed movies, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, and XXX.

He's got the pumped-up, mean and moody looks, but Vin Diesel doesn't display the acting muscle to match in this by-the-numbers action thriller from director F Gary Gray. The xXx hunk made this standard-issue adventure before his ascent to stardom and it has been messed with and re-shot ever since. The tinkering hasn't helped, however, and it comes across as a pale imitation of a Steven Seagal vehicle in which Diesel's DEA agent reluctantly enlists the help of an imprisoned drugs lord in order to track down the mysterious new cartel boss — Diablo — who may be responsible for the murder of his wife. As bland as its title, this isn't helped by unbelievable characters and action scenes of perfunctory viciousness.

    • Radio Times
  • Slick, empty action movie that goes nowhere interesting and offers a hero who is indistinguishable from a vicious criminal.

    Fairly typical shoot-em up

This is a fairly typical shoot-em up, with just one man seemingly shooting everyone in site, and not even disturbing a hair on his head, which would be very difficult for Vin Disel.

Its always difficult to try and compare films, but I kept thinking that this was a mixture of the old Death Wish series of films, with a bit of Die Hard, and Lethal Weapon thrown in for luck.

Its not a bad film, with lots of action which will/maybe keep you interested. The acting is ok (even for Vin Disel), but the story line is old old old. Cop goes after bad guys(no I'm not saying what happens), lets just say watch Lethal Weapon 2, and there's your plot.

I'm giving this a 3 star rating, as its an entertaining film, but its doesn't deserve anything better.

    macho bs

This is a cheap made for video action thriller. If you liked Stallone and Arnold in their earlier stuff, you’ll probably be right at home with this. Suspect acting and fireworks glore.
