Historical accuracy is the furthest thing from Andrew Lau's mind in this period actioner. Yet he still succeeds in evoking a time of fear and despair, when arrivals at New York's Ellis Island were as likely to find themselves entering a nightmare as embarking on the American Dream. The fight sequences (particularly the finale atop the Statue of Liberty) are staged with typical ebullience. But the flashback structure complicates an already tortuous plot, which sprawls over 16 years as Ekin Cheng is eventually joined by his son, Nicholas Tse, in his bid to find the Japanese ninjas responsible for the murder of his wife.

    Standard Fare

Effects, above average. Fight scenes, very average. Story & emotional content, high.

That is a basic review of, what I hoped to be, an above average Hong kong movie.

Unfortunatley the emotional, well written parts of the movie were not complimented by the fight scenes, that in my opinion took a back seat.

Not what you want from an action movie.
