This key film in the trend towards a more realistic depiction of life in the Old West provides a thorough study of the Sioux tribe's mores as experienced by an English aristocrat who is unfortunate enough to become its prisoner. Richard Harris gives a compelling performance as the man who is tortured, ridiculed and turned into a beast of burden before finding ways to improve his lot. You'll need a strong stomach to watch Harris undergoing the elaborate (and accurately depicted) Sun Vow ceremony in which he is impaled by hooks. Despite a largely native American supporting cast and much use of unsubtitled Sioux dialogue, the film's veracity is spoilt by Judith Anderson's turn as a Sioux harridan. Its success led to two sequels.

Harrowing account of tribal life and customs, with much bloodshed and torture and most of the dialogue in Indian. Occasionally impressive but not exactly entertaining.

    You have`nt seen this!

Cracking movie starring Richard Harris.Basically he finds himself taken in by a tribe of native americans and the story follows his journey from camp 'dog' to acceptance as a warrior.Makes a change to see the indigenous american people portraid in a good light. The initiation ceremony is worth watching the movie for alone.Enjoy.

I thought the subtitles where broke

This is a deep film I watching it and playing with subtitles trying to see what the indians are saying. Then it dawned on me you aren't meant to see what they are saying to get the total experience of the isolation he has to endure. Harris plays this role to a tee showing he had a full grasp on the character. This film will leave you feeling sad but satisfied a good couple of hours viewing.
