    O. K. So this is not a Pixar Studios production. There is not a lot of story either. Its all rather predictable. So why have I given it 4 Stars? The answer is because of the rather good songs, some sung by Sean Lennon.

The catchy music, and the charming setting of Olde Paris give this film a style harkening to times gone by.

I think the kids will enjoy it for the animation and some comedy antics of the heroes.

I think the Adults will enjoy it for the moral of the story, and the music.

It took a little time to warm up but once 'the monster' starts to sing, I was hooked! It is a lovely animation, a sweet and funny storyline - plenty of plot which could take many directions but follows a time honoured path, reminiscent of classic 'monster' perception tales like Frankenstein, King Kong and Hunchback of Notre Dame - again the moral being 'Who is the real monster here?'. I loved it so much I watched it again straight away and its even more charming the second time round. Bravo!

Its a bit hard to swallow at first, but give it some time. But the story is nice and the main theme song + the flea's voice are amazing.

What on earth were they thinking? The first rule of kids' animation films is this: you must have a cute - and preferably cuddly - animal in the main (creature) role, such as a puppy, cat, bunny or lion cub etc. OK so this does have a monkey in a supporting role, but the 'hero' (for want of a better word) here is a 7 feet tall flea! As fleas are the insect equivalent of vermin and are associated with slums and unwashed dossers, as well as spreading the Great Plague, whichever writer thought a disease-ridden, bloodsucking parasite could be a suitable candidate for young children to watch must need his head examined. It is so hideous it has to have its head covered with a mask, making it look a lot like the Phantom of the opera on a bad day. And.. er... do we ever see it feed? What do you think?!

Leaving aside the flea, the human love interest part of the story is fairly bland, and the 3D is mostly non-existent & it might just as well have been in 2D for what little difference it makes. If this is the best we can expect from French animation, well, Disney, Pixar and Studio Ghibli have nothing to worry about. Try Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle instead: 2 fantastic animations.

Format: Cinema - Odeon Digital 8000 HD; Real D 3D
