Dial M for Murder was not one of Hitchcock's best movies, but this remake isn't even in the same league, despite the appeal of its two stars, Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow. Douglas takes the Ray Milland role here, plotting the demise of his beautiful, wealthy wife, Paltrow (played by Grace Kelly in the original), by getting her lover, Viggo Mortensen, to murder her for a $500,000 fee. So far so good, but things quickly come unglued. So, too, does Andrew Davis's direction, which sometimes fails to maintain the tension of the first hour, while the script seems more interested in making obvious points about life and art in the late 1990s.
Douglas is perfectly cast as a predatory 'control freak' in this classy, intelligent remake of Hitchcock's dramatically... read more on Time Out
Slick, glossy thriller that fails to involve an audience on an emotional level.
I rented this film to see Viggo Mortensen and was rather surprised how much I enjoyed it. Michael Douglas does his usual creepy slimeball turn to great effect and Gynneth Paltrow plays well off him. Someone said David Suchet is under-used and I agree. More should have been done with his small part. As it is I was left wondering why an actor of his calibre was chosen for a few scenes. The alternative ending in the extras was disappointing. I expected something more radically different. Well worth a viewing.

Maybe this film gets more exciting at the end. I don't know. I gave up about half way through.
Since the storyline was pretty linear and dull, I was sitting patiently throughout the 90 mins of the film waiting for the twist that would make it more interesting.
I waited...and waited...blink.....and that was the end of the film. There was absolutely no suprises worthwhile of a crime thriller. The alternate ending was a *little* more interesting than what they stuck with, but nevertheless, a very dull piece, I don't know why they bothered.

I was recommended to this Romantic/ Thriller by the Tesco Computer which recognised that I enjoy this Genre.
I was not disappointed, although I thought that the Director, Andrew Davis (The Package, Under Siege & The Fugitive etc.) should have used the David Suchet character of Detective Mohamed Karaman more in this tale of plot and counter plot.
The tale was not a complete rip off of 'Dial M for Murder' and it had enough twists and turns to make it different and exciting.
The eternal triangle of Entrepreneur Steven Taylor (Michael Douglas), his UN interpreter wife Emily (Gwyneth Paltrow) and the artistic lover David Shaw (Viggo Mortensen) is well played out. This was a cast to die for and indeed some did!
However spotting some of the flaws in the plot was also fascinating and no, I am not going to spoil them for you. Watch it yourself!
As with every Davis film, things turn out alright in the end, but it is an enjoyable roller coaster ride of murder, love, betrayal and mayhem getting there.
Well worth the money, but you might think twice before going into the kitchen after you have watched it.
Starts off as four stars. Douglas is his usual brilliant, controlled actor. The story grabs you and surprises you. It only gets three stars, because I didn't think it stayed on that level. It slowed down a bit and wasn't the jaw dropping finale I hoped for. Still worth a look though.
I'm unashamed to admit that I only rented this movie because I'm working my way through Viggo Mortensen's films. He gives a remarkable, subtle performance in this movie, managing to make his character very ambiguous, despite the blatant things he does.
Look out for the artwork - it's Mortensen's own.

Inevitably you have to compare this film to Hitchcock's original. The tension in this re-hashed version just doesn't even compare. Douglas is his usual charismatic on screen self and Mortensen plays his role well enough though Paltrow is a lacklustre as ever. Not a bad film but sadly dramatic tense music just isn't a substitute for actual tension that Hitchcock is such a master of.
I enjoyed this film. The plot keeps you enthralled and the acting is impressive.
I was particularly impressed with Viggo Mortensen and Gwyneth Paltrow and judging by their performances it was clear even then that they would go on to become succesful actors.
I would recommend this film.
This film was exellent with a well defined plot and dramatic acting. Douglas was his usual brilliant self, displaying both sides of his character as a very good romantic and a scheming cold blooded killer I would rate this film priority viewing for excitement and suspense.
