Clint Eastwood, hot off of his Academy Award win for Unforgiven, directed this small character study, appearing in the guise of a cops-and-robbers action picture. The film takes place during the fall of 1963. Eight-year old Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther), the son of a devout Jehovah's Witness mother, is staying home while all the other children are out trick-or-treating. But then prison escapee Butch Haynes (Kevin Costner) appears in his kitchen. Needing a hostage to aid him in his escape from jail, he grabs Phillip. Phillip curiously looks up to Butch and willingly accompanies him. Butch gets rid of his fellow escapee after he tries to molest the child, and Butch and Phillip take to the Texas highway, on the run from the cops. The cop in pursuit in this instance is Police Chief Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood), riding in his sleek Populux Airglide trailer -- his mobile command headquarters. On the road with Garnett is Sally Gerber (Laura Dern), a pushy pre-feminist criminologist, along with a creepy federal agent who is an expert sharpshooter. Butch is not particularly anxious to make it to the Texas borderline, and neither is Garnett in any particular hurry to catch Butch. As Butch and Phillip form a father-son attachment, the paths of Butch and Garnett gradually come together, in time for a final confrontation, after which Garnett confesses, I don't know nothing. Taut but predictable

A good thriller, perhaps 20 minutes too long, but the outcome is pretty telescoped early on. Kevin Costner gives an understated but quietly menacing performance as the killer on the run with his captured hostage, played delightfully by TJ Lowther. Well directed by Clint, whose performance is subdued but effective.

Perfectly pleasant

Have a new found respect of Kevin Costner since watching Mr Brooks and thats why I took a chance on this.

With no real expectations I went in half hearted and found myself genuinly interested and touched at the end.

If you like something bitter-sweet this is well worth a watch.

Good Classic Clint direction

Love kevin Costner in most things and love Clint's direction and this does not disappoint. if you have not already seen it, its one worth watching.

Amazing and deep

Good movie, quite deep as well, very sad and amazing in the same time, drama of the first shelf, anyway, enjoy watching!

once this one started i remembered it from years ago and still enjoyed it.kevin costner was brill and the little boy so cute.bless!!

A bit of a drag but ultimately a good film

A bit in two minds about this film. The script was quite slow for a lot of the film, but it showed the growing bond between Costner (the violent escaped convict) and the boy (a Jehovah Witness) after he is taken as a hostage.

For a change in a film, there is a lot of time taken to develop the characters, but it lost a bit because of it - the film perhaps being a bit too long for what is essentially mostly dialogue while driving in a car.

All said and done, however, I enjoyed the film, but the negative parts dragged down the rating.
