It is what it is
By a customer from London, England , 30 Dec 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Altman's warm style captures the spirit of the Prairie Home Companion (PHC) perfectly. PHC is a quintessential American variety show, the type that forgot or ignored that it was out of style. It features a quirky mix of musical numbers (jazz, folk, country) and humorous skids (like the duct tape pretend-commercial). The story itself takes a back seat to the warm mood of the extended PHC family comprised of actors, audience, and fictional characters that Altman captures with such genius.
Depending on your mood the movie can make you laugh till you drop or make you cry. But be warned: the movie is tough to understand for people without a sense of community or family. It plays on that theme by juxtaposing the old timers who have experienced the facts of life (love, loss, death) and carried on, finding solace in humor and song, with the young, clueless and suicidal urbanites (represented by Lindsay Lohan).
All in all it is a great show for anyone who can laugh at his/her own self and life's little quirks. It will greatly disappoint anyone with an overblown sense of self or anyone who is prejudiced against any of the musical styles featured in PHC. The movie is what it is, just like life.
If you have an extended family the movie is a must-see. It is thoroughly entertaining.- Was this review helpful to you?

Laugh, cry, and join in with a masterwork.
By lewislewis (6 reviews) from Coventry , 17 Oct 2012Fabulous performances and great music from start to finish. Everyone really seemed to be enjoying this nostalgic trip back to when radio was king, the all star cast a huge treat for us film fans, used to seeing them in completely different roles . A film I want to own.- Was this review helpful to you?

They don't make them like this anymore!
By timethief (3 reviews) , 24 Nov 2011This is a very gentle film and well worth watching. It's like a master class as the acting is absolutely fantastic with an extra mention for the Radio MC who I have never come across before! The songs and singing is good and at a push Meryl Streep could have become a country singer if she hadn't concentrated on acting. Of course Kevin Kline is as quirky as ever! If you want high drama and special effects - this film is not for you but if you want a warm feeling for an hour and a half then you've chosen the right film.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 08 Oct 2011Very disappointed. Managed to watch the first 15 minutes and gave up. Expected more from the film considering the actors involved. Storyline was slow and mundane.- Was this review helpful to you?
