    [Highly rated reviewer]

beautifully acted ,filmed and costumed. Credit especially to the portrayer of mad King Christian who gave him credibility and complexity. A heart breaking love story combined with revolutionary fervour and political intrigue in 18C Denmark

Compelling and gripping. The horrors and hypocrisies of life for Europeans before Enlightenment are brilliantly portrayed. Fabulous acting and beautifully filmed. Now want to find out more about the historical accuracy of film.

  • Beautiful, but a little slow

This is a beautifully made, and beautiful looking film, with excellent performances from the whole cast, but especially Mads Mikkelsen. However, it is a little slow, and on occasion struggles to keep you engaged. Also, a note to those reviewers who think it is a Dutch film - it's Danish! There are multiple references to Denmark throughout it, so I've no idea how you could think it was Dutch

For a Dutch film I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this story line. The acting was brilliant but rather sad too!

  • Subtitles are ok on Blu-ray

Don't be put off by the reviewers who said they couldn't read the subtitles. We've just watched it on Blu-ray without any problems. It's not the most action-packed movie in the catalogue, but it passes an evening pleasantly enough, and the 'beauty and the beast' main characters are a joy to watch. Maybe other countries' history just isn't as interesting as your own...

Not sure who is rating this a 4 star movie but I am assuming they are Dutch - Was so bored I didn't make it to the end and really don't care what happened.
