Tom Ford's directorial debut is painfully slow as it unfolds. It's compounded by periods of slow motion, just in case you felt giddy at the pace. You know, the luvvies are going to love this but I'm guessing it's going to be on DVD very soon and pretty much a box-office disaster. Jaw-dropping experience when Julianne Moore opens her mouth to speak, The voice coach needs to be shot, although to be fair it's not a full Dick Van Dyke moment!

Any upsides? It's quite a short film.

Best advice is to wait for the DVD and not bother to make it a high priority item. Good Luck.

  • Slow to start but good to finish

Wasn't sure whether I was going to like it at first as it was quite confusing as to whether it was the present time or a flashback. As it got going it turned out to be enjoyable and Colin First was brilliant and played the part exceptionally well. It was moody, quite dark and yet poignant. The ending was unexpected.

gentle and unassuming yet shocking as this isn't Victorian times but the effects of social and psychological isolation are heartbreaking

This is a beautiful tale about a grief stricken gay man. I loved the gentle way it unfolded and Colin Firth displays his usual excellent acting.

  • Passable, but a little too neat

Colin Firthh, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult all give fine performances in a stylish and subtle film. However, there are times when the script and direction want to spell everything out a bit too much for you (the constant references to the cold war, 'your heart condition'). In the end it was watchable and enjoyable, but a little too neat to be a fantastic film. Also don't watch the making of featurette which will make you hate everyone in it.

Dire. Hours of my life not well spent. This was boring from start to finish, I hoped it would get going but it didn't
