    [Highly rated reviewer]

The first version of the classic tale of the washed-up movie star seeing his waitress-turned-actress wife eclipse him in fame still stands up well. This is mainly due to superb, natural performances by Gaynor and March, and a suitably sour and caustic script that keeps sentimentality at bay.

  • A little boring

I didn't enjoy much this movie. The plot quite simple and the leading actress not very convincing. She just looks so ordinary to play a rising star. Sound and picture quality not very good. Watch it only if you feel curious.

A great story about how fame and glory are sometimes paid with a price. I must say that there were tears rolling down my eyes at the end.

  • One of the best from Hollywood's golden age

    Rated - 5.0 stars

This is the first version of the story of one Hollywood career on the skids and one on the rise. It is a magnificent film of its time with stellar performances from Janet Gaynor and Frederic March; a great script from an array of writers; and tight, compelling direction from William Wellman. This was the first Technicolor film to win an Oscar and if this film were in better condition the colour would look wonderful. Hopefully at some time restoration work will bring back the quality of the original.

  • Poor Quality

A wonderful film poorly transferred to DVD; the sound quality is appalling and the final scene cut to ribbons.

A very bad experience of one of the best insights into Hollywood.
