This film is still fantastic. The story is fantastic, the romance believable, the songs are classics, and the performances are out of this world. This musical, with Judy Garland's rising star falling in love with James Mason's falling star, is still moving and brilliant today.

The deleted scenes, however, seem to detract from the magic. To suddenly break into speech superinposed over black and white stills completely spoilt my enjoyment of the film. Rather than making it more coherent, they broke up the narrative for me.

It is nice to see what was cut out, but there's no option to watch the film without the deleted sections, and, quite frankly, once is enough.

The extras disc is fairly thin on the ground too, with only a few alternative sequences which are worth watching.

A genuinely classic film, but a poorly done DVD.
