Previn has received a lot of plaudits for this, his first foray into opera, and it is a piece that he has obviously taken great pains to get right but, for me, it is neither fish nor fowl - it is not choc-full of great tunes (sorry, arias), or even I would suggest, any great tunes, therefore theatre audiences will not leave humming any tunes under their breath. This leaves dramatic content which, on this evidence, with the great Williams play faithfully rendered beautifully, it has in spades. It is overlong I feel, and will always need a great singing actress like Fleming to hold it together, but I cannot imagine wanting to see/hear it more than once. It reminded me of the soundworld of a sadly neglected piece by Marc Blitzstein called Regina, revived in New York many years ago, this a better piece all 'round. For me, thanks, but no thanks.
