Most helpful review
Desireless
By Francis Houseman from Autumn Falls, England , 29 Sep 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I watched this thinking I'd love it, but i watched it hoping it would hurry up and end. It all seemed a bit wooden, although Marlon Brandon did look wonderful in it(!)- Was this review helpful to you?

By bohobabe (7 reviews) from Northampton , 16 Nov 2012How this film was given 12 Academy Award Nominations I just do not know! It was boring and the acting was laughable. Marlon was the exception in that he was as gorgeous and enigmatic as ever and carried off his part well.- Was this review helpful to you?

Glad I watched it
By pixie (238 reviews) from Redruth , 16 Nov 2011Always wanted to watch this film and I was not disappointed, Marlon Brando is excellent and beautiful looking as Stanley, the husband of por Stella who loves him and his temper but also is worried about Blanch her sister who is obviously slowing going insane. Vivien Leigh is brilliant as Blanch and its a shame that in real life she was also slightly unhinged and died young, she was a wondeful actress.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bombshell Brando
By Ferry41 (223 reviews) from Oxford , 08 Aug 2011Absolutely electric performance from Marlon Brando in this classic film from Elia Kazan. Brando plays a working class Pole in a seedy district of New Orleans dealing with the pretentious sister of his wife, who has a shady past of her own.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Streetcar Named Desire
By a customer from North of Watford , 01 Mar 2011This toned-down version of a play by Tennessee Williams touches on the subjects of alcoholism, pretentiousness, promiscuity, domestic violence, rape and madness. The feel of the piece is more stagey than cinematic. Stage & movie director Elia Kazan exercises firm control and draws terrific performances from Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Karl Malden and others but, after more than half a century, the whole project seems dated, unpleasant in substance and maybe slightly overrated. Now heres a funny thing, I have always liked Vivien Leigh but never liked any of her films in entirety. Maybe this one will grow on me.- Was this review helpful to you?

OK but not great
By 5ft7offootballheaven (300 reviews) from London , 08 Jan 2011If you want to see classic Brando then perhaps On the Waterfront is better. Seemed a little claustrophobic but maybe that was the point. Felt more sorry for Stanley than Blanche. Some good lines in it and my favourite scene was when Stanley clears the his place at the table in some style and then offers to do the same.- Was this review helpful to you?
