A Great Drama with some good scares
By Graham Tate from Halifax, UK , 05 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
OK, so the trailer for this movie makes it seem like more of an action horror, but you can't judge a movie by its misleading trailer (lol).
I rated this 5 stars soley on my opinion, as its the best movie ive seen in the past three years. Its hard to describe this film without giving away any of the several twists the film takes. Admitted, the film intentionally confuses you over and over to make you think your not seeing what in fact you very well could be. Two sisters, after being released from hospital return to there father and rather nasty stepmother (a nurse, who the father met while his first wife, the sisters mother, was getting treatment at a hospital for what i assume was cancer)
On the first sleepless night back strange noises and visions plauge the sisters, not to mention the mental torment the step mother places on them, whats going on at the house? what happened at the house while the sisters were recouperating the trauma of their mothers death? What happened in the wardrobe of su-yeons (one of the sisters) room? The movie is quite slow-paced, but this gives time for character build ups, and it also gives you time to think about what youve just seen, although you wont know everything until the end credits. The film not only has a brilliant script (which must have been freaking HARD to write), but the cinematography (cool, i got to use that word!) is beautiful, wide angle shots of a bright sunny countryside, mixed with slow moving eerie shots of dark corridors, added with the usual classical music which fits perfectly.
If your not really a fan of Dramas or movies where you put the pieces together at the end to properly understand, i would leave this be, but if you are, AND you also like to see some disturbing horror shocks in your movies, then this is one for you. Absolutley Brilliant movie, without a doubt one of the best of recent times.- Was this review helpful to you?

(238)A beautiful idea often poorly executed.
By paulstafford (1 review) , 20 Apr 2013Stating that this is one of the greatest Korean films made would be an insult to Korean films. Whilst there are elements of 'A Tale of Two Sisters' which are undeniably stunning, the story, and more importantly the delivery, make this film good, but not great. The production design and cinematography are absolutely stunning, often working together to craft a deeply disturbing mood that pervades every scene in the house. The colours are delicious and the camera often creeps slowly around the house as though it does not belong there. The answers provided at the end more or less wrap up a story that demands a lot of patience and suspension of disbelief from the viewer, as very few answers are provided before the 85th minute, and the eventual pay-off is not rewarding. The story is often impeded by Korea's occasional penchant for overly melodramatic storytelling which unfortunately was the choice made in this film, and which ultimately leaves it feeling more like a soap-thriller than a psychological horror; the motives and choices made by certain characters are often unbelievable and at times quite ridiculous. The film can be worthwhile at times, with some well crafted moments of suspense and horror, but it often relies on the same mechanisms for suspense, so that by the 4th time of use, they become boring and predictable. This is a good idea for a film, often undermined by itself.- Was this review helpful to you?

More top Asian Horror/drama
By Ramps (10 reviews) , 19 Apr 2013Great film this, there were some moments where you actually feel like they do in the film especially the dinner party scene. The look and feel of the movie is really well done and there is a couple of good scary bits. It was a bit complex at times but it all comes together. Well worth a watch if you like Asian cinema- Was this review helpful to you?

Korean gold
By Kdgl (10 reviews) , 27 Jan 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
I like a lot of Korean horror/thrillers, but this will always be my all time favourite. I think a lot of Korean horror is shot beautifully. The colours and even wallpaper are well chosen for atmosphere. This has a great pace, the story unravels and gradually it gets creepier as it goes along - it's not terrifying, but it's definitely unsettling - until you finally descend into its madness with it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't look under the sink
By Bwildfoot (31 reviews) from London , 04 Jan 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
The US remake The Uninvited is a passable tribute, but for sheer creepy the original knocks its spectral socks off. You might be forgiven at first for thinking that this movie is using the same unconventional Asian narrative style as Ring or The Grudge, but this is a far cleverer, unfolding collage of scenes that lead to a grim and shocking conclusion (and annoyingly one I thought of years ago and Ive now had to bin). Unnerving, edgy and beautifully filmed but with a real gut-wrenching emotional heart that the remake somehow seems to miss. Great complex story-telling employed to devastating effect. Dont have nightmares.- Was this review helpful to you?
