This adaptation of John Grisham's first novel cleaned up at the box office and propelled the then unknown Matthew McConaughey to the front rank of Hollywood stars. McConaughey plays an inexperienced southern lawyer defending a working-class black man (Samuel L Jackson) who publicly murdered the white trash who abducted and raped his ten-year-old daughter. Sandra Bullock is the enthusiastic law student who offers to help McConaughey. In the redneck corner is politically ambitious district attorney Kevin Spacey and most of the small town of Clanton, Mississippi, where the Ku Klux Klan exerts a sinister influence. McConaughey makes a good fist of the lead role, but, as with most Grisham adaptations, the real strength is in the supporting turns — Spacey, Jackson, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Cooper and Oliver Platt are all superb. It's a bit too long, but, as most lawyers charge by the hour, why should that be a surprise?
"...The most satisfying of the John Grisham screen adaptations to date....Well served by a stellar cast....In the film's most riveting performance, Jackson capitalizes on his role's potent dramatic opportunities..."
An old-style Hollywood melodrama, effectively staged though making little effort to explore the issues involved; it's content to endorse vigilante action providing that it's not carried out by the Klan.
A lot missed from the book. Not adapted well, rushed at the end, and it the jury does not do much as in the book, still a good plot with a predictable ending
A fabulous film, Samual L Jackson's portrayal of the father torn between staying on the right side of the law and getting justice was excellent. Matthew McConnaghy as the idealistic young lawyer does a brilliant summation at the end, a tip do as the jury does! for full effect.
another masterpiece from John Grisham.
superb performances all round.
has you on the edge of your seat waiting the verdict.
well played out twist in the final summing up....

This is one of my all time favourite films; I've lost count of how many times i've seen it, and I enjoy it as much every time. It has a great story, fantastic cast, powerful characters and believable performances.
I can't praise this film enough - it's not often that a film lives up to the book.

This film was fantastic. I had read the book and for once the film was just as good which is true for the John Grisham books that have gone on to be a film. It was riviting with a great cast. My husband really enjoyed it too.

I saw the cast of this film and I thought to myself, well its gotta be good, and I wasn't wrong. The film is an emotional rollercoaster of emotions for the viewer, I must admit I don't cry at films, but I shed quite a few tears in this.
The plot is about a mans family being torn apart by 2 callous individuals and he takes it upon himself to take revenge at whatever means necessary. But when he becomes the one who is thrown in jail and a war on racism erupts outside, the court room battle that follows is so intense it's rivoting viewing.....if you want to see a film of a compelling nature, this is it.
A great story by John Grisham well translated to the movie. Good acting. Powerful representation of the evils of predudice.
The moment the film started I thought - 'oh dear, we've seen this film' - The title did not instantly generate memories that it was amazingly written by John Grisham, of the superb acting performances (especially Samuel L Jackson) - that it was a very moving, dramatic film which kept us watching right to the end. Well recommended (although a better title to do the film justice!)
this is a great film but be in the mood for a bit of a weep at the start, and any parent can completely understand samuel's character and what he did.
A good movie certainly worth watching although I still think the best filmed version of a John Grisham novel is The Rainmaker.
Some good solid performances - notably Samuel L Jackson and Matthew McConnaghy - enhance this story about race-motivated crime in America's Deep South but it's not the first and probably not the last film on this subject matter to let too many Hollywood cliches to creep in.

"...[McConaughey] is dynamite in a performance of smarts, sexiness, scrappy humor and unmistakable star sizzle..."
"...Plenty of enjoyable turns....Casting McConaughey in the lead certainly pays off..."
"...Handsome..."
