Although shot in Spain, this western also shown as A Town Called Bastard is one of the few British ventures into the genre. Set in 1895 in Mexico, it is a brutal affair, in which Stella Stevens seeks to discover who killed her husband a decade earlier, while Martin Landau threatens to reveal that his brother, Robert Shaw, is not a priest but a ruthless bandit. The cast nearly compensates for a slackness in direction from the normally accomplished Robert Parrish, as the film lurches with surprising awkwardness from tightly shot moments of brooding tension to frantic outbursts of stylised violence.

Not much good to say about A Town Called Hell. It was hell to watch being filmed in such poor colour. The directing was dire and the acting not much better. ... more
