In the midst of perhaps twenty years of pretty poor product, it comes as something of a surprise to discover such a charming and successful little film from Wim Wenders. Recreating, in well-realised silent fashion, the birth of German cinema, through the efforts of the Skladanowsky brothers, and interspersing it with interviews with the last-remaining daughter of one of them, he gives us a lovely film, celebrating both the art and science of the movies. Be warned that the end credits seem to go on forever (and make up nearly a fifth of the complete running time), but otherwise this film is warmly recommended, especially to those who once revered this director (back in the seventie and eighties) and had despaired that he would ever do anything worthwhile again.
