Landon Carter (Shane West) and his friends are the coolest kids in Beaufort, North Carolina. They wear the right clothes, drive the right cars, and get into just enough trouble to be rebellious. Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) is the opposite--there doesn't seem to be anything cool about her. The preacher's daughter, plain Jamie wears big boxy dresses and the same sweater every day. She endures the scorn of Landon and his friends with a smile, always looking for the best in people. When a prank planned by Landon and his friend goes terribly wrong, the principal sentences him to tutoring on the weekends and working on the school play, activities in which Jamie is involved. As the two begin spending time together, Landon finds himself intrigued by this guileless girl who sees beauty in everything and exhibits unwavering faith in people and in the world. When circumstances beyond Landon and Jamie's control threaten their love, he stays by her side and does everything he can to make her dreams come true. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks.

Based on Nicholas Sparks's bestseller and featuring MTV pop singer Mandy Moore in her first leading movie role, this type of love story might have worked back in the seventies, but it's far too cloying and contrived to seduce today's down-to-earth teenagers. At least seasoned actors Peter Coyote and Daryl Hannah cope well in their atypical roles as a preacher and a single mother. However, Moore barely convinces as the ultra-demure daughter of a small-town Baptist minister who falls for rebellious Shane West while rehearsing a play he's been forced to appear in as a school punishment. Director Adam Shankman is apparently trying to reproduce an audience-friendly date movie in the vein of previous offering The Wedding Planner, but few will buy his patronising discussion of faith and morality or his mawkish approach to a tragic turn of events.
This Mandy Moore vehicle has a risible Footloose meets Love Story plot aimed at the kids who might propel the American... read more on Time Out
Another music star makes her transition from songstress to actress... however this is suprisingly good, once past the usual teen flick it gets to some real unexpected depths as Shane West (Get Over It) falls for young Mandy Moore (Princess Diaries) and trys to help her live out her dreams, this isn't quite romeo and juliet but it's still heart renching stuff that proves some of these kid's really can act! The film is innocent enough but the issues at hand are directed at a more adult audience... hankys at the ready!
I rented this, thinkin it would just be another chick flick but it was actually a pleasant surprise! Mandy Moore is actually more than jus the stereotypical teen bitch that she plays in the princess diaries! There was a lot crammed in to a short film but it made me cry at the end so...
