I found the a.m session with Rodney Yee, straight forward and easy to follow. It lasts about 20 minutes and is a gentle way to wake up in the morning. It was well balanced and thought out. I think most people would be able to use this session. I used it several times and would consider buying the DVD to learn this quick 20 minute routine.
Personally I didn't take to the second session (p.m.) by Patricia Walden. What is she doing on a sheet of Hard Board in the Desert? Who wants to do yoga on a 8x6' sheet of wood?
There was also a lot of one position (downward facing dog) which she seemed to excel at. It was almost showing off and not even my yoga teacher can do it like this. So the average member of the public might feel a bit disheartened by this, especially a beginner.
The repetition of this posture did not seem in balance with the rest of the routine. I watched it through once and didn't look at it again. Not for me.
Overall worth it if you've not seen any Rodney Yee and you want a quick 20 minute routine for the morning.
I'm a teacher and often find it difficult to unwind at the end of the day, especially around the end of term with so much going on. Not getting a good night's sleep, I then find it difficult to get up in the mornings and am weary of the day ahead often feeling tired and overwhelmed by all that I still need to do and the deadlines I have to meet. After reading about Yoga and its cumulative effect (even 10 mins a day is beneficial and can sometimes be better than a one hour session once a week) I was encouraged to try these short sessions out.
I have found this DVD to be one of the ones I use the most, reaching out for it especially at these busy times.
In the morning, the AM routine is perfect for when getting up is difficult: I crawl to the lounge, put on the DVD and in relaxation pose start the breathing exercises, which gently seem to awake me. The gentle stretches really seem to energize me and at the end of 20mins (which go by very quickly) I'm more awake than if I had kept the alarm on snooze for a couple more times. And definitely more chilled out during the day!
The PM routine, though a little more challenging for someone unexperienced in Yoga as myself (it helps if you are flexible) has also been a life saver. When I finish the routine, all the tension is gone from my body and I feel completely relaxed, ready for a good night's sleep.
Even doing only one of these sessions each day, I have noticed a great improvement in my energy levels and a decline in my stress/anxiety levels. I'm more relaxed, happier and get much more done. My patience at work has also increased and I am able to enjoy my time spent in the classroom with the children again (instead of worrying about all the paper work to be done after school!). After all, this is why I became a teacher in the first place!
