Hans Petter Moland's Aberdeen is possibly one of the best independent films made in the last decade. The biggest shame is that it was never released in the UK! Performances from Stellan Skarsgaard as the drunk father and Lena Headey as his daughter are spectactular and deeply moving. Moland proves that a strong script and a great cast can go much further than special effects and obvious casting - a good thing that he never listened to producers who were offering him more money to cast a star in the role of Kaisa. He instead chose an actress who was clearly passionate about the role. It really is a rare thing to find intelligence, heart and realism in films these days - Aberdeen has them all while dealing with subject matters that are hard and heartbreaking. Absolutely five stars!
