In this thriller, an aging cat burglar becomes a crusader embroiled in a deadly cat-and-mouse game involving murder and a government cover-up. Adapted by distinguished scenarist William Goldman from a novel by David Baldacci and featuring a powerful all-star cast, the story works at different levels, not only as a straight-forward thriller but also as an insightful look at the love between the old thief and his estranged daughter, a highly successful prosecuting attorney. The trouble begins when ex-con Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood, who also directed) decides to pull off one last heist before retiring. Just as he finishes looting the vault of a well-fortified mansion, a drunken couple enters the adjoining bedroom apparently eager to start making love. But something goes awry and a violent tussle ensues that abruptly ends when gun-wielding men bust in and shoot down the woman. During the ensuing chaos, Luther slips out. Only later does the audience learn that the would-be lovers were U.S.-President Alan Richmond (Gene Hackman) and Christy Sullivan (Melora Hardin), the young wife of the President's biggest supporter Walter Sullivan (E.G. Marshall). As the investigation and cover-up begins, Luther, who has already been contacted by hard-boiled and suspicious detective Seth Frank (Ed Harris) begins to fear that he will be blamed for the killing and prepares to leave the country. He tries to see his daughter Kate (Laura Linney) to make peace with her for having been absent in prison during most of her life, but she rejects him. Luther goes to the airport, but just before he flies, he sees a press conference in which President Richmond, without so much as a twitch, goes on a tirade concerning his stand against violence. Absolute Eastwood

When a master thief's final strike makes him a witness in a high profile murder case he suddenly becomes the target of the police, the Secret Service and the victim's influential husband...

Clint Eastwood as an actor as well as a director appears to get better with age and this film is no exception. The script is both intelligent and filled with plenty of twists and turns, the performances of the collected Hollywood A-List are excellent throughout and the characters are well developed.

If you liked 'Mystic River' you will certainly like this one and vice versa. Get ready for a good night in...

Clint Eastwood at his very best!! Not only acting but Directing as well! This is a must!!!

Very enjoyable and lots of action too!!!

A good taut but also droll thriller very typical of it's star and director Clint Eastwood, good performances all round and one to watch again.

Clever and exciting

I am a latecomer to this film but found that it exceeded my expectations of it.

Clint is very good as both Clint the actor and Clint the Director.

The set pieces are well managed and the acting is first class.

I'm not sure about the ending but endings are never easy....

Recommended!

Good, but not one of Eastwoods best

This is a political thriller Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood with Ed Harris, Gene Hackman, Scott Glenn & Laura Linney involved - so you know that you are going to be in for a well made and well acted film, and that is exactly what you get. It falls down on the slightly far fetched plot that sees an ageing master thief outwit the White House, the Police and a hired hitman. It has all the characteristics of an Eastwood directed film with good performances from all mentioned above but still not one of his best.

ANOTHER GOOD CLINT EASTWOOD FILM HE GETS BETTER THE OLDER HE GETS CARNT COMPLAIN BOUT THIS I THINK (MY OPINION) OTHERS MAY NOT LIKE BUT AM A EASTWOOD FAN
