Even though Jim Carrey has as many detractors as supporters, there's no denying his breakthrough hit Ace Ventura: Pet Detective exuded a barmy charm, but this silly sequel is often just plain irritating. For this adventure, Ace is off to Africa where he gets mixed up with warring tribes and the hunt for a rare bat. The slim plot is just the flimsiest of excuses for Carrey's wacky grimaces and elasticity, while the slapstick is relentlessly juvenile and director Steve Oedekerk's direction lacks the surreal inspiration of the original. Visiting Britons Ian McNeice and Simon Callow struggle to bring a little dignity to the proceedings.

    HILARIOUS! BETTER THAN THE FIRST!

The first film 'Ace Ventura Pet Detective' was really funny. this is hilarious on every level. the first is excellent but this is even better. basically, Ace Ventura { Carrey} is a pet detective who seeks solitude in a buddhist temple after the death of a racoon{ a very clever sketch on ' Cliffhanger'} then is brought out of retirement by an English traveller named Filton Greenwall who takes him to Africa. his mission? to retrieve a sacred white bat named Shakaka to the Wachati tribe to prevent them from war with the Wachotoo tribe who will definately kill them. pefect on every level.

    And now, a yak

I like to flatter myself that I am something of a culture vulture. I have read, and enjoyed, Anna Karenina (didn't rate Ulysses, but that's a different review). I loved Citizen Kane. I can distinguish between Baroque and Ricoco. I can name the major battles of the US civil war.

    I LOVE this film.

I don't mean that in the ironic, faux-reverential way that some people have for 80s kid's tv shows. I LOVE this film. In my opinion it (and its predecessor) is up there with Withnail & I, The Big Lebowski, Life of Brian, Spinal Tap etc as the one of the funniest films ever made.

I have been mocked for this by friends, one of whom has a phd in political science, and when I finally convinced him to actually sit down and watch it, he laughed so hard at Jim Carrey emerging from the vulcanised rubber rear-end of a replica rhino that I genuinely worried that he might require urgent medical attention. This film is just too damn funny.

I will forgive Jim Carrey anything because of these two films. Genius.

It just doesn't get much better than this!

Possibly Jim Carreys finest hour. Just when he knocks the posh guy out, slings him over his shoulder and wears him as a fur scarf thing - PURE GENIUS!!

Excellent film, Love both Ace Ventura films although this one may be slightly funnier than the other one. I couldn?t fault a thing with this film. Absolutely excellent, and Jim Carrey is brilliant too (as usual).

    First one is better!

This movie is not as good as the first one but there are a few laughs. I think that Jim Carrey gets a bit carried away in this movie but its worth seeing if you have seen the first one. Not very highly recommended!

If you liked the first one you'll probably love this. Zany and frankly a bit mental at times Ace Ventura is a good family film. But, when you think about it you can actually get a much better film featuring Jim Carrey in the Trueman Show, Liar Liar, Me, Myself and Irene or even The Mask. I know I'm going against the grain a bit by saying this, but if you like Carrey you really are better of getting something else, as this is probably one his poorer films.

The children love this movie. It is a movie where you can get a bit of peace and quiet for a couple of hours. Great for a rainy afternoon.
