Adam's Rib

A playful allusion to the Book of Genesis, ADAM'S RIB is an inspired farce and perhaps the best showcase for the fantastic Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn duo. George Cukor uses the chemistry between his stars to create a delightful, sophisticated comedy about the battle between the sexes, based on a sharp and sprightly Oscar-nominated script by Cukor's collaborators, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. When two married lawyers take opposite sides of a case, they create comic fireworks both in and out of court. District Attorney Adam Bonner (Spencer Tracy) prosecutes a young woman, Doris Attinger (Judy Holliday), who has shot her philandering husband's mistress; her attorney and Bonner's wife, Amanda (Katharine Hepburn), is determined to prove that the prosecution's case is only a reflection of sexist double standards. Amanda thinks that women should have the right to do exactly what men have done for years--get revenge. ADAM'S RIB is a film that is superbly directed, written, and acted, a true romantic comedy in classic Cukor style.

This witty and sophisticated “battle of the sexes” comedy is a peerless joy. Tailor-made for Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, it gave the roles of a lifetime to an enduring partnership that first flourished on screen in the 1942 comedy Woman of the Year. They face each other as married lawyers on opposing sides in court, as Hepburn defends and Tracy prosecutes Judy Holliday. Holliday almost puts the star couple in the shade as the dizzy blonde accused of a shooting involving her philandering husband, Tom Ewell. The delightful Oscar-nominated screenplay by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin brings out the best in the talented stars, and the subtle direction of George Cukor shows him to be a master of his craft — watch how he handles the long takes, letting the performances take the flow, especially in the scene where Hepburn visits Holliday in jail. The sexual politics are still topical today, as relevant now as they were prescient then, and the movie stands as a glorious tribute to all involved. A year later Holliday won the best actress Oscar for Born Yesterday, reprising the role that had made her a star on Broadway.

    Funny and charming

Where can you go wrong? Here we have George Cukor, the director of 'Philadelphia Story' and 'My Fair Lady', directing Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn in a comedy about a husband and wife who end up on opposite sides of murder trial.

The comedy is sharp and fast-paced, and while the script may lack consistency the two stars have easily enough charisma to pull it off. It's surely an entertaining way to spend one and half hours of your life. But beyond that, though, it tries to deal with some serious issues such as gender discrimination in law. These issues aren't as relevant today as they were then, as now it's just as unacceptable for a husband to cheat on his wife as it is a wife to cheat on her husband, if not more so. And in attempted murder cases, men and women can expect the same treatment.

It's amusing and fun, but unfortunately a bit dated. You should see this if you're in the mood for a comedy classic from Hollywood yesteryear.

    Good, but not that good!

I feel like one of those people who just don't get old films but really I do get them I just found this one a little over rated. There I said it! Yes it is good, yes Spencer tracey is perfect as usual and Katherine Hepburn clever and cutting as always but after reading reviews for years going on about how funny this was it just didn't quite meet those expectations for me. Still, quite impressive topic given that it was made at the end of the 40's. Worth watching definately, but don't use this film as the one to try and introduce the classic comedy's to someone who's not an old flick kinda person.

    On screen chemistry explained

    • 27 Apr 2004

Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy have the best screen chemistry ever, according to top scientists. The Royal Society of Chemistry tested the silver-screen couple using a special formula - instead of in the lab or box-office and Oscar success. The nation's top chemists said that - like any chemical reaction - film chemistry needed two contrasting ingredients which combine to make something with "all the right stuff". John Emsley, author of the report "Vanity, Vitality and... Read more
