In this surprisingly dark romantic comedy, the usually sweetness-and-light Meg Ryan stars as a vengeful ex-girlfriend who spends her waking hours thinking up ways of making life hell for the man who dumped her (Tcheky Karyo). This involves teaming up with the more strait-laced Matthew Broderick, whose childhood sweetheart has dumped him for Meg's ex. It's an almost vindictive tale of love gone sour from actor-turned-director Griffin Dunne (best known as the harassed lead in Martin Scorsese's After Hours), with an enjoyably acidic bite that's often missing from romantic comedies.

A romantic comedy with a cutting edge, as people behave badly to one another in the name of fidelity.

Two jilted lovers, an astronomer and a one-time biker chick, team up to spy on their involved exes only to fall in love with each other.

Although this twisted romance possesses the soul and edgy atmosphere of an independent film it does not quite have the conviction.

While having their former lovers under surveillance, Sam and Maggie interact deeply and honestly yet ignore their actual camaraderie for the false but fascinating one they create with their exes.

The movie is filled with really innovative shots and use of light, both in the actual making of the movie and within the plot. I don't want to give anything away, but the shot with the paint roller is my favorite in a long time.

The situations may be unusual, but all the characters behave and react with utter loyalty to the internal logic of the world freshman director Griffin Dunne has created.

It is funny and engaging, full of genuine honesty cleverly edited into a satisfying tale. There are so many oportunities for this movie to make the wrong choices and I was overjoyed that those pitfalls were avoided.

Karyo, best known for playing stolid types in art-house hits such as La Femme Nikita 1991, displays a surprising gift for physical farce and manages the English language with finesse. ``Why would I have sex with a hamburger when I can make love to a steak?'' he tells a suspicious Linda, trying to assure her he's not unfaithful.

Ryan is cast as a borderline psychotic named Maggie for whom love means never having to cry. Wearing a battered bomber jacket, aviator goggles, a knowing sneer, and eyeshadow that might have been applied with a pushbroom, she's the perfect Greenwich Village vision of a woman scorned. Cuddling and grinning are not on her agenda, and she pulls it off well, showing her acting versatility. It is definitely not her typical typecast role, and we love her more for it.

    a good watch

I loved this film the first time i saw it back in 97 and it didnt dissapoint me the 2nd time around! one of those films that is over too quickly - although it does have some quite corny episodes to it and i am not a huge fan of meg ryan i really enjoyed this.

A tale about jealousy and how break ups can twist the mind of normally sane human beings!! a good pick me up film!! and congrats meg, i am a fan again!!

So awful I can't put it into words

This is truly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Please don't waste 2 hours of your precious time watching it. It is dire.

It's not that bad. I liked Meg Ryan's performance. It was quite funny the way how both main characters tried to take revenge on their partners. But the DVD doesn't have so many features, except trailers and some production notes.

    boringgggggg

from meg ryan I would have expected something better instead of this. The film was sooo boring that I was looking forward to the word 'the end'.

I did not switched it off only because I've paid for it.

    Routine stuff

Watch this movie only if ur a die hard fan of Meg ryan. Nothing much to say except a very predictable story.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear

I'm sure this made a great screenplay, but the casting and everything else were just awful. Even Meg Ryan was bad, bad, bad and Broderick doesn't bear thinking about. I wouldn't have bothered in retrospect.
