A heart-warming, tear-jerking tale
The best thing I've seen in ages
It's gripping viewing
As the parent of an autistic child this film seemed very close to the experiences I feel as a parent. Having tried unsuccessfully to explain to friends and family what life is like as a parent of a child with ASD I simply now say to watch this film.
A nice, heartwarming film but the first 30 minutes are as close a representation of life for a family with a child with autism as you are likely to see.
Like some other reviewers here, I also am a parent of a child with Asperger's or officially ASD. this film also brought a tear to my eye as I often felt as if i was watching scenes from my own family life. It was supberb and more films like this are so needed to spread the word about Autism and ASD. then maybe the unsolicited comments from people like ' he's very naughty, isn't he' or ' you need to learn to control your child or don't have them' might not actually happen on a weekly basis from the un-informed.... Anyone who is touched by autism of any kind should see this film and then rent it to Again show everyone they know!
I rented this after watching it on its first airing on TV, the story of a normal family coming to terms with the diagnosis of their autistic son and the reactions of the family and friends. It was thought provoking and would be worth a watch not only by parents in this possition but as a worthy drama, with a happy ending as such .
As the parent of an autistic child I found this film very true to life. The acting was excellent and some parts brought a lump to the throat. This is by far the most accurate film covering autism which I personally have viewed.

Being based on the book 'A Friend Like Henry by Nuala Gardner', I do advise reading this before watching the film, as the film only shows part of what Nicola and Rob went through with their son, and where the film ends, the book carries on quite a bit further, explaning the trials the family went through. The film doesn't really do justice to the book, however, it is gripping from start to finish, opens a window of what life is like for many parents in Rob and Nicola' position. It is a truly touching film, that will have you reaching for the tissues by the end.
A bit slow and grindinly directed but great performance from the boy and the mother. A good feel good tale, but not one that stands out as something other than a good BBC drama.
