I am a huge fan of Joan Hickson as Miss Marple.
Geraldine gives us a different (no less valid) version of the character. She doesn't play her just for laughs in the way that Margaret Rutherford did
This Jane Marple has a past. She is more flirtatious. She has a sparkle in her voice to go with the twinkle in her eyes.
Just because Olivier played Hamlet does that mean that no other actor should attempt the character? I don't think so.
O.k. the plots have been tinkered with but it made me enjoy the stories again and see some new possibilities.
Give Geraldine and some truly stellar supporting casts a chance and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Okay so this DVD in terms of the story differs a little from the original and Geraldine McEwan doesn't play Marple in the same straight sombre way Joan Hickson did...
But who cares ?
It's a great story well acted by McEwan and the supporting cast including a delightful Zoe Wanamaker and a surprisingly good cameo from Catherine Tate pre her Doctor Who Donna role.
Frankly I like the McEwan Marple, she's spirited, fiesty, amusing and she shows in the role that Marple has a passionate romantic side. That differs from the way Hickson played, which although at times sublime, was I felt a little grey and too straight.
Go and rent this if you like whodunnits and Christie, it doesn't disappoint and I even solved it myself - which is a first !!
