After a splendid career, spanning over 30 years, exploring a variety of styles, Al Di Meola still ranks among the most popular guitar-masters of jazz and jazz-rock. With countless recordings, numerous awards, and six million albums sales later, Al Di Meola is still challenging himself and his music. This DVD filmed live on stage with Speak A Volcano in Leverkusen, Germany in November 2006, Al Di Meola rediscovered after almost 20 years of acoustic guitar his love of the electric guitar without denying newer influences. The result is a balancing act between volcanic electronic ecstasy and emotionally moving sound excursions, between zealous improvisations and intimate conversations, including many compositions of Al Di Meola himself, and five Piazzolla tunes. Although there aren't many guitarists who can match Al's virtuosity and control of the fretboard, I still felt the performance on show here was fairly lacking in energy, perhaps after a few decades of being at the top can become boring, at least that's how it seemed to me. Technically nothing wrong with his playing or indeed the rest of the band, the percussionist in this viewer's opinion was the only member on stage who appeared to be enjoying himself. The highlight of the dvd is possibly the 'Al's guitar tips' feature in the extras. Still, anyone who hasn't already seen Di Meola in action will be blown away by his complete command of the guitar. I would suggest 'Friday Night in San Francisco' as an alternative to this.
