and Faye Dunnaway acts - but her facial muscles never move, even when people are being beaten to death in front of her. The opening sequence is the only part of the film that's shot outside the basement - so it could easily have been a stage play. Maybe that's how it started out. Basically we're in for the long haul hostage crisis scenario when three bad seeds (two of whom are brothers) bungle a robbery and wind up hiding in a former speak-easy with their wounded friend. The problem with this film is that there is absolutely no explanation for why any of the characters do ANY of the things they do. It's really pretty amazing - like writing a book without a single adjective. Then there are some pretty implausible bits - like 2/3 through when you find one of the hostages is actually the mother of another hostage. But what's the point - you never find out why she keeps her grown son a secret and it doesn't have much to do with the plot. It's just forced in there to explain something unrelated - and it doesn't even do that well. It's full of holes and the direction is claustrophobic because of the basement. Also, the cops and journalists outside say stupid things and do everything wrong. There are so many character 'revelations' in this that are meant to give the story real meaning - but they don't. They just look shoe-horned in. I could go on, but I won't.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Kumquat (1 review) from Bristol , 22 Aug 2008As a huge Kevin Spacey fan, I was very excited for this film. As it started, my excitement grew, seeing the great cast that had been assembled: Matt Dillion, Gary Sinise, Faye Dunaway, William Fichtner, Viggo Mortensen, John Spencer and Skeet Ulrich- all fantastic actors. But then the film started, and from the beginning, it's confusing and leaves unanswered questions. Characters have revelations for no reasons, and the activity outside the bar seems like an afterthought because of the lame dialogue. All in all, there have been worse films, but this isn't one I'd ever rent again.- Was this review helpful to you?

Strangely compelling
By Max from Stroud , 09 Jun 2006Great diversity among characters, a must see for all of Kevin spacey's fans. There is one scene where a paparazzi woman is trying to ask a police chief some questions on live TV and he just unloads profanities, absolutely hilarious to watch. Very well thought out film, really pulls you into the plot. Only bad thing I have to say is that it does drag on a bit.- Was this review helpful to you?
