    [Highly rated reviewer]

There's nothing to redeem this film. It's a minger. It's a wonder how a film like this gets made. Rob Reiner, who has made good films, should hide himself in a darkened room for at least a decade.

Wilson plays a writer with gambling debts. He must write a novel in 30 days or face the wrath of his creditors. He hires stenographer, Kate Hudson (she looks much better as a blond) to help him write said novel. Interwoven with the contemporary story is the period story which Wilson' character is writing. It's awful.

A big problem I have with these New York romantic comedies. The kind made by Nancy Meier and Reiner amongst others is that they’re incredibly patronising. The lead characters are always very superior, they think they're a better than most. They talk down to there audience, perhaps because sections of it are ignorant.

I am not ignorant and I'm not going to sit through 90 minutes or worse and typically over two hours of this rubbish. Stay away - even for fans of Wilson and Hudson.

  • Awful movie

Worst 30 minutes of a film i've ever watched. I literally could not force myself to sit through any more before turning it off. So Kate Hudson decides to stay with Luke Wilson and help him write his book despite

    a) he lied about his situation and said he worked for a lawfirm, and didn't even tidy the apartment before she arrived

    b) no pay for a whole month despite demanding daily pay

    c) no guarantee of being paid at all

    d) never having read any of his work

    e) no prior relationship at all

    f) the threat of gangsters coming to kill him if he didn't meet his 30 day deadline, being implicated in this mess and putting her own life at risk for no reason at all....

I will stop there. I could go on, which is bad for only having watched 30 minutes of the thing. I would have put zero stars if it had let me.

    Rubbish.

I usually love Kate Hudson films, however this is one of her boring films unfortunately, though both characters have good chemistry thanks to the acting, i just don't like such a lack of characters as i prefer more people in a film and i also like more location scenes otherwise the film feels rather tedious, and i didn't really enjoy the jumping in and out of a story that the characters were writing. There was something there in the film as there was some chemistry and romance but the plot just wasn't strong enough to carry the film through, although there weren't that many characters and location changes the film still managed to keep me quite interested as you didn't know how the film or novel he was writing would turn out however overall it's a bit disappointing i wouldn't list it as being anything special or one for the collection.

  • A good story

Alex and Emma is a great story that does not quite live up to expectations. Disappointing because with a little more thought, it could have turned out better. The story is that a writer owes a ;large gambling debt which he promises to pay off in 30 days by finishing a novel. He engages a secretary or stenographer to dictate it to and typeset for him and their initial tentative relationship turns into something more.

One of the dramatic devices used is jumping between the current day and the 1920's setting in which his novel is based. This does work well because it also sets some people we see in the author's daily life inside the story. This works surprisingly well and demonstrates Kate Hudson is an able comedienne and that Luke Wilson has a comic touch, probably better demonstrated in a couple of other movies but in evidence her as well.

It is let down though by its sluggishness. While the unravelling of the story works well in one way, it just does not happen with enough pace to keep us engaged.

A 3 out of 5 for me but still good viewing
